China declared on July 13 that it will be stepping up its enforcement of its tougher internet regulations in an effort to remove information from social media and video applications that is thought to be offensive to minors.
Websites within the country are strictly regulated by the Communist Party in power, which frequently censors anything deemed to be violent, pompous, or politically provocative.
Periodically, the Chinese government imposes restrictions on a range of industries, including gaming, commerce, and internet celebrities.
The nation’s internet watchdog announced on July 13 that it was starting a two-month “clean up and brighten” effort to better protect minors online and improve the online environment.
In support of the campaign, social media, online retailers, app stores, short video and live streaming platforms, and China’s Cyberspace Administration have all declared that all significant problems pertaining to children’s smart gadgets and online safety will be resolved.
It also goes after other kinds of behaviour, including exalting violence in schools.
Furthermore, explicit and graphic material found in children’s cartoons and music, along with the online exploitation of minors, will be removed.
It attempts to remove sexually provocative merchandise from online retailers and prohibit content that introduces kids to risky friendships or objectionable language or slang.
“We will pay close attention to issues specific to minors, as well as work together to create a good online environment,” said the press release.
The action, which has been followed by several other similar actions in recent years, takes place on the eve of China’s children’s summer break.
Another “clean and shine” campaign against people who flaunt their opulent social lifestyles was initiated in April, prompting the censorship of some well-known online sallies.
